Lampedusa, charming and attractive, is a piece of Africa in the centre of the Mediterranean sea with intented coastlines and interesting coves. Continentally attached to Africa, and it is located at the 35° parallel. Thanks to its geographical privileged position the climate is very mild, seabeds are abounding in variegated sea fauna. In the surrounding sea water of Lampedusa there are big areas with shallow water which form the famous ideal school of fish for reproduction. That is why it is considered to be the natural fishery of the Meditarranean sea. The South/West coast of Lampedusa is characterized of a lot of coves and baies which have a seabed of fine sand that exalts the crystal clear sea water with a wide shade of colours. The baies have an inviting and suggestive aspect. Rabbit Beach is the most beautiful cove of Lampedusa and also of the Mediterranean sea.

In this cove the sea turtle "Caretta Caretta" has been laying eggs since the beginning of time. This is an extraordinary event which takes place regularly. To protect this "UNIQUE HABITAT" a few years ago this beach has been declared natural reserve. The people in charge of the natural reserve protection surround the sea turtle nest with a special metal net. The bay access is free for people during the day and there is a limited access for cars, scooters and ships. At night is forbidden to go to the beach not to disturb sea turtles. If you are lucky you can witness the opening of the sea turtle eggs or you can watch sea turtles resent to the sea after being treated by the people of WWF.
